ISLAMABAD – May 28, 2025: Pakistan will mark Eid ul Azha 2025 on Saturday, June 7, as the crescent moon for the Islamic month of Zilhaj was not sighted on Tuesday, according to the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee.

The announcement came following the committee’s key moon-sighting session held on the rooftop of Islamabad’s Kohsar Block—home to the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad acknowledged under a late-night press conference: “No credible sighting of the Zilhaj moon was reported from any part of the country.” After consulting all zonal committees and relevant authorities, we have unanimously decided that Zilhaj 1 will fall on Thursday, May 29, and Eid ul Azha will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7.”

The chairman noted that while parts of the country experienced clear skies, the majority saw overcast weather, further reducing the likelihood of moon sightings.

Experts from several scientific institutions, including Dr Mohammad Hasan Ali of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Shaukatullah Khan from SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), and Zainul Abedin from the Ministry of Science and Technology, were present at the meeting to aid in the verification process.

Simultaneously, zonal meetings of the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee took place across provincial headquarters, collecting testimonies from their respective regions. However, none provided the required lunar sighting confirmations.

SUPARCO had earlier predicted that Eid ul Azha was likely to fall on June 7. Based on astronomical data, their projection showed that, although the new moon of Zilhaj 1446 AH was expected to be born on May 27, its position and the general state of the weather, particularly in the federal capital, where clouds covered the heavens, would make it almost impossible to spot anywhere in Pakistan.

Eid ul Azha celebrates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to present his son as a sacrifice to Allah on the 10th of Zilhaj in the Islamic calendar. Considered one of the most important Islamic celebrations globally, it coincides with the end of the annual Hajj journey to Makkah.
