A Dangerous Night in Ukraine:

Russia attacks Kyiv last Thursday night after Ukraine hit its warplanes. People in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, were woken up by loud explosions. Russia launched a massive attack using over 400 drones and more than 40 missiles. These dangerous weapons hit homes, buildings, and even a moving train in the city.

Fires broke out across the city. Many buildings lost their windows and walls. One apartment building had its top floors destroyed. The metro system had to stop running because of the damage. Some people were trapped, and firefighters rushed to save them. Sadly, three of those firefighters lost their lives while trying to help others. In total, at least four people were killed, and about 40 more were hurt in attacks across the country.

Why Did Russia Do This?

Russia said these attacks were revenge. Just a few days earlier, Ukraine had launched a secret mission called Operation Spiderweb. Ukrainian drones flew deep into Russia and attacked airfields where powerful bomber planes were kept. Some of these bombers can carry nuclear weapons, so the attack shocked the Russian military.

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to respond. He said this war was not just about land or politics—he claimed it was about the “future of our children.” His government called Ukraine’s drone attacks “terrorist acts” and used them to explain the large-scale bombing.

Cities Hit Across Ukraine:

Kyiv wasn’t the only place under attack. Russian missiles and drones also struck:

  • Chernihiv is a city near the border with Belarus. 14 explosions hit it.
  • Lutsk, near Poland’s border. At least 5 people were hurt.
  • Ternopil, in western Ukraine, where emergency workers were among the injured.
  • Poltava and Khmelnytskyi, where buildings, warehouses, and homes were damaged.
  • Lviv, where Ukrainian air defences shot down missiles overnight.

It was one of the largest overnight attacks since the war began.

How Big Was the Attack?

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia used:

  • 38 cruise missiles
  • 6 ballistic missiles
  • 407 kamikaze drones

These drones are designed to crash into targets and explode. The attacks were meant to confuse and overwhelm Ukraine’s defences.

Putin even spoke with former U.S. President Donald Trump, saying Russia “had no choice” but to strike back. Trump later told reporters that “maybe it’s better to let them fight for a while,” which upset many Ukrainians. They felt he didn’t do enough to stop the violence.

Bravery in the Middle of Fire:

In Kyiv, firefighters and emergency workers worked through the night, even as buildings burned around them. The three firefighters who died were trying to rescue people trapped in damaged buildings. “They were working under fire,” said Ukraine’s emergency ministry.

In the Darnytskyi district, flames broke out in a tall apartment building after a drone hit. In another district, a shopping centre was set on fire. Drone pieces were found in three different parts of the city. In the morning, many people walked through the rubble, trying to collect what was left of their belongings.

Ukraine Responds, the World Watches:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked the world to act quickly. He said, “If we wait, more lives will be lost. We must act now.” Other Ukrainian leaders called Russia a “terrorist state” and demanded stronger support from allies.

While Ukraine is trying to defend itself with U.S.-made anti-air systems, it has also begun striking back. On Friday, a Ukrainian drone hit an industrial area in the Russian city of Engels, setting off fires and thick smoke.

But despite all the danger, Ukraine’s people continue to stand strong. Many say they won’t give up, even with the nightly fear of air raids.

What’s Next?

Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia have not yielded any significant progress. Both sides continue to fight. Ukraine says it will keep defending itself, while Russia says it won’t stop either.

The world is watching closely to see what happens next. But for now, the people of Ukraine face another night of fear, hoping for safety, peace, and brighter days ahead.
